I can direct people to a good rant on the subject though. It's been 
slightly on my mind because I'm reading "It Must've Been Something I 
Ate", the second volume of essays from Jeffrey Steingarten (ex-lawyer 
turned food critic for Vogue of all places).

The whole book comes highly recommended (as does the first, "The Man Who 
Ate Everything" which has likely been mentioned here before), but in 
particular the chapter "Cheese Crise" deals with the bizarre nature of 
FDA cheese attitudes, and is an excellent opportunity for the Brits on 
this list to feel nice and smug.
