For something a little bit special but not "blow your bank balance" then
can I heartily reccomend Artubus on Frith Street.

The various reviews linked to from here

http://www.urbanpath.com/london/modern-european/arbutus.htm

say it all -

"This is a radically spanking, thoroughly massive piece of
restaurant-making. The kind of place that New York or Paris would kill
to have. You can't eat better than this."

"here's nothing déclassé about Arbutus, which leaps straight into my
top 10 London restaurants to show off to visiting friends. Charming,
flavourful, imaginative, fags- and muzak-free and with that
revolutionary wine policy, it breathes the atmosphere of a foodie shrine
that knows exactly what it's doing."

"The best thing, however, is Arbutus's sense of time and place. When you
eat here, you simply could not be anywhere else in the world, at any
other time, than in England in late spring or early summer. And how
nice, that you actually get to pay less for that privilege, rather than
more."

They even have a set early-evening 3 course menu for 18 quid if you're
on a budget.
